CCC Bute RegattaUnfortunately Troikka can't make that weekend for other reasons but it's a good one and Morag Machin sends the following: The
weather is looking promising and it is now less than a week until the
CCC Bute Race on the 21st & 22ndApril. The format is the same
as in previous years - a race round Bute on the Saturday and short
windward/ leeward races at Largs on the Sunday. This is always a
good way to blow away the cobwebs and get the season off to a good
start. I've attached a copy of the sailing instructions and a
race entry form!
As an aid to the Race Officer, owners intending
to race are requested to notify the office (office@clyde.org) by a
simple e-mail by 2.00pm on the Thursday preceding any event. NB:
We are not seeking firm ‘commitment’ only your ‘intention’ to race –
ALL are welcome on the start line. Nevertheless your attention to this
request would be much appreciated.
SOCIAL AT LARGS SAILING CLUB
There
will be a social at Largs Sailing Club on Saturday 23rd at 6pm
(depending on the finishing time of the race). The cost is £11
per person payable on the night. Please phone or e-mail the
office with the number of your crew who will be eating so that we can
let the caterers know in plenty of time. This is always a good
night & a good chance to catch up after a long winter!
CCC Opening MusterYou
wait all winter for a sailing event and then two come along at
once! Hot on the heels of the Bute Race is the CCC Opening
Muster on the 28th April. The course is same as last year!
The sailing instructions are attached.
As an aid to the Race
Officer, owners intending to race are requested to notify the office
(office@clyde.org) by a simple e-mail by 2.00pm on the Thursday
preceding any event. NB: We are not seeking firm ‘commitment’

SOCIAL AT ROYAL NORTHERN & CLYDE YACHT CLUB
There
will be a muster at the Royal Northern & Clyde Yacht Club on the
Saturday night. Please contact the Club Office for tickets.
They are priced at £15 a head (coffee, if wanted, £1 extra payable at
RNCYC on the night) and are on a first come, first served
basis. I hope to see you there! As in previous years
there will be bacon rolls & bucks fizz at the RNLI station at Rhu
on the Sunday morning at around 10.00! Keep an eye out for the
smoke! Bring your wallets & be prepared to make a donation to
the RNLI!
I hope to see you there!

Kip Regatta 2012 You can kind of tell this is a press release written in Yachting Life speak but here you go anyway. The
dates are set, the season is upon us and “Team Jackaroo” have signed up
on travelling north to defend their overall win at last years Savills
Kip Regatta. Jim Dick and crew of the J-97 Jackaroo will be back
to participate in the 2012 Regatta on the 19th & 20th May. It’s
great to know that Jim & Co will be back this year. They had a
tremendous time at regattas here last year in some very competitive IRC
classes” enthused Duncan Chalmers, Kips’ General Manager. Billed
as the “First Major” Regatta of the season , the event has always
attracted yachts from further afield, getting in that vital training
& crew work required to hopefully set the pace within their class. IRC
classes will again dominate but the ever growing CYCA and white sail
classes remain as will one design starts for Sigma 35, Etchelles and
Sonata.. Newcomers in numbers this year will be the SB3 fleet which
we hope will again attract further travelling support. Savills
west coast Director Andrew Perratt will again oversee the shore side
festivities based at the newly re-vamped Chartroom Bar and Restaurant
as well as having some racing time on the water aboard the Beneteau
40.7 “Grand Cru.” IRC class shouldn’t see a Salamander 1 and 2
overall this year with the Corby having been sold south, but you never
know with the Corson clan. Slight change for the CYCA
white sail fleet in that they will start on the main regatta start
line, complete the first windward leg and then head off on a longer
fixed mark course, finishing again off the marina entrance. On
the water race management will as usual be organised by the Royal
Western Yacht club who together with members and friends will ensure
good racing again with P.R.O. Johnny Watson. Discounted berthing and hoisting packages are available from Kip for pre, during and post regatta periods. For
further details on the event and entry form contact Kip Marina on 01475
521485, e-mail: info@kipmarina.co.uk web: www.kipmarina.co.uk ........... PS
The other bit of news on Kip regatta is that there is a groundswell for
a fast CYCA handicap fleet which is for boats/owners of heavier cruiser
racer design and don't necessarilly feel as competitve in an IRC fleet
now - we have had 4 or 5 owners ask about this now so feeling is that
there is a class to be created. How about it?
Icebreaker Regatta at Ardrossan I
wouldn't want to second guess the weather but this event could easily
represent the two best racing days we'll see on the Clyde this
season. No time right now to write more but this was apparently the 5th
edition of this coaching regatta and it lived up to all expectations.
Hopefully I'll have more photos and words toward the end of the week
but meantime many thanks to Barry Dunning the affable and entertaining
RYA keelboat coach up yet again to deliver his stuff, to Pete Wright
who ran an impeccable series of races and to all the other helpers mark
layers and so on who made it possible. As well as the Clyde Marina
people. Results should be up on the FYC all-moving website The
dazzle graphics reveal that this Sunfast 37 is the replacement for
Misjif the well known SJ30. Seen here on their very first race and
getting to grips with the unfamiliar. Here's
on the water coaching in action and strangely Neil Sandford appears to
be ignoring the coach''s entreaties rather than hurlling back good
natured abuse. Colin
MacDonald the FYC deputy heid yin just won't give up with his one
design racing. There is one other 1720 on the Clyde after
all. Carmen
2 are still game enough to make it down from Rhu for this event
which will have helped sharpen them up for the coming season. There's a tiny tiny video clip of an SB3 on the clydesailing facebook page. more later
Cool dinghies at Prestwick

Icebreaker AgainAnyone
who's anyone should be going to this event at Ardrossan on 14/15th
April. Yes it's early but it is SO worth it what with all the coaching
from RYA's Barry Dunning, John Highcock, North and Hyde sails and the
Clyde Marina cat. THe entry form is not only available on the FYC
website but also here where you can download it for no extra charge.
I think you ignore the reference to entering for one or both
weekends - FYC living in the past methinks. Speaking of the past,
Pete Wright has gven assurances that he will be on top form to run a
hectic series of short races and a splendid time is guaranteed for all,
as they say. Don't just download, Sign up. CYCA as
well you'll note. You might just learn something and you'll
certainly be warmed up for the CCC Bute regatta the following weekend.

BUCS/BUSA Team Racing Championship Playoffs Report – 3rd& 4th March 2012
Hosted by the Universities of Glasgow and Strathclyde Sailing Clubs at Clyde Cruising Club Dinghy Section, Bardowie Loch 14
teams from the length and breadth of the UK assembled at Bardowie Loch
to battle it out for the final 8 places at this year’s BUCS/BUSA Team
Racing Championships. The Championship Finals will be held at West
Kirby Sailing Club over Easter. Saturday was described as
‘challenging’ for all involved. The wind was pretty light to
start, but in true Bardowie-style, it filled in (gradually swinging
round to make the Course Manager’s job just that wee bit more
difficult) until the gusts were making the sailing conditions pretty
testing. Fortunately, our team of helpers were on the ball and
were able to deal swiftly with all the hiccups. After a late
start (thanks to Sheffield not showing up!), we eventually managed to
get through 60 (!) races, and Southampton Lilac were winning at the end
of the day. Although Bardowie was perfectly glassy when the helpers
showed up on the Sunday, the breeze quickly filled in to a more
manageable level than before, and the sun came out. Racing was
able to start at the estimated 9.30, and we were finished by half

for the legendary ceilidh, we were very impressed that about ten of the
English teams braved it, and that everyone there had a go.
Everyone had a great time and, to quote Birmingham, “It was the best
sailing social we’ve had all year!” Thanks to all the helpers,
umpires, the Race Officer, the CCC, our sponsors Red Bull and to
everyone who came all the way up to Scotland to make this event a
success. report by Niall McLeod, Photos by Alice Meaden
Laser SB3More
news from the SB3 class. First, watch the video of the 2011 'Worlds' at
Torbay. You have to put up with some pretty hellish music for the
first 2 mins but it gets better after the gun goes at 3mins.
Choose HD mode and you get full screen. Wouldn't it be good
to have that kind of action on the Clyde instead of grinding around in
IRC leadmines?
Zhik SB3 Worlds 2011 Round up from Laser SB3 on Vimeo. In that event Ross Lang / Dan Challis / Matt Thomas won a race in the
Silver Fleet of the 103 boats whilst Doug
Paton / Dane Ralston / Roddy Anderson were awarded ‘Best Newcomer’ to
the fleet at last year’s UK Nationals in 2011 coming 12th out
of 36 boats – in both these regattas the fleet included current and
past Olympians as well as multiple world and national champions from a
variety of classes. The SB3 class are now up to 11
confirmed entries for the Laser SB3 Scottish Championships at Brewin
Dolphin Scottish Series. Of the entries confirmed so far we have a
number of travelling boats including; 4 SB3s from
England and 1 SB3 from Ireland – some of these competitors
will be making a family holiday of the event, travelling around the
West Coast before and after the event. The class have also extended an
invite to all competitors due to race at the Scottish Nationals to join
the class at the Savills Kip Regatta on 19th/20
May for what is hoped to be a great warm-up regatta for the fleet.
The Scottish SB3 Fleet is pleased to
announce that Bolle
(the international eyewear manufacturer) will be providing support to
the class during BDSS. I had hoped we might get a pic of some SB3
hot chick wearing Bolle shades but alas.... Also supporting the fleet
at BDSS 2012 are: Portavadie Marina (free berthing), McLeods
Contruction (free craning) and the Laser SB3 Class Association.
The 2012 SB3 season starts on 6th April with the SB3 Inlands
in Rutland which is followed by the Sunbird Icebreaker Regatta at Ardrossan the
following weekend. Sunday and Wednesday ‘East Patch’ racing will also be
available from 15th & 21st April
respectively. It’s not too late to join the class and Scottish Class Rep
Doug Paton we would be delighted to hear from any prospective owners or
crew – the class try to keep an up-to-date listing on boats and
available crew. Don’t forget to follow us on Facebook (search Scottish

Red Diesel In
general I have been not too upset about having to pay tax on the red
diesel I use - (which is not very much over the course of a season),
taking the view that anything which keeps large ugly stinkboats tied up
in marinas is a Good Thing. I have missed whatever it is the government have been saying on the subject recently and I found the RYA explanation
not a little confusing. It appears that having red diesel in the tanks
when cruising or racing outwith UK waters could become illegal.
It all seems a legal nightmare and it is certainly the case
that if it became impossible to use red diesel then there would be
difficulties for cruisers on the west coast where commercial vessel
suppliers are often the only outlet. It is the sort of thing where we need the RYA to stand up to HMRC et al and you are encouraged to object on the HMRC website.
The Goacher
Masterclass - how was it?
If you're a
Fifteener I don't suppose you can risk missing this. Maybe
order a sail too???

West Highland Week
2012
What?
Already? Alison 'Hot Toddy' Chadwick is not slow to
get the
publicity under way for this fun event in peak rainy season.
( 28July- 3rd Aug) NOR is now available on the usual website whyw.co.uk
There's a new look to the publications for the 65th anniversary event
and a slide show from last year's event is now on the website
with photos from Ron Cowan, and whose own website www.yachtingimages.co.uk
contains also a wide selection of photographs from previous events.
There will be ten classes for the 2012 regatta, four for restricted
sail and
two IRC classes. IRC Class 0 banding is from 1.025 and above with Class
3
1.024 and below with the remainder CYCA handicap classes. The JRC may
alter
the bandings of any class depending on entries.
As ever the emphasis is on FUN and no doubt we'll be hearing more as
things progress.
Handycaps
Is IRC the way to go? Seems to be for decent handicap round
the cans on the Clyde. Check out the ircrating website.
Interesting news from the CYCA though.
The
rule that the roller furling headsail allowance is not given if the
headsail is less than 130% of J has been relaxed, recognising
the
trends in yacht design with smaller foretriangles. Note that
it
is still mandatory that whatever the headsail rated it is the only one
to be used. Read
the full story here. - along with other stuff.
Thirtyseven Feet Of
Fury
From their website: "The new Maxi 11 is a
perfect fit. She is super fast, easy to handle and – even though you
can sense her affinity to the Volvo Ocean Race Monsters and designed
for IRC and ORC rules – she is surprisingly comfortable below deck.
Thirty-seven feet is enough to get standing headroom,
nice saloon, a twin sink galley, spacious heads and shower compartment
and quarters for 4 + 2 people.
So if you really enjoy high speed sailing in comfort and
don’t mind irritating fellow sailors by leaving them behind while you
manoeuvre your Maxi 11 at ease with a crew of one or two the new Maxi 11 is really
for you." If you have 200,000euros lying around of course.
And did you know that the Volvo P1800 was designed by
Pelle Petterson? No neither did I
Who heard about this?
25-26th Feb at the
SportScotland National Centre, Burnside Road, Largs.
"It will be
bigger and better in 2012. It is a
fantastic opportunity for everyone to catch up with everything sailing,
windsurfing and powerboating. There will be a number of workshops,
conferences and talks taking place over the weekend as well as the new
'RYA Scotland Boat Show'."
Click the logo for more info on the RYA Scotland site.
"One of the major
attractions that will be at the RYA Scotland Boat Show is the RYA's 'Our
Sporting Life - Sail for Gold' Olympic heritage exhibition.
It will be a celebration of our British Olympic and Paralympic sailing
heritage. You can immerse yourself in 112 years of triumph and glory at
an extraordinary exhibition celebrating Britain’s unique Olympic and
Paralympic sailing legacy. "
Entry to the RYA Scotland Boat
Show is free whereas the Big Weekend workshop/conference thing is £25
per day. There are some interesting looking sessions in the
programme.
There
is also an RYA Regional Race Management seminar being held at RGYC on
4/5th Feb. (subject to demand /£75) but Regional Race Managers probably
knew about that anyway.
Ouch!

This is another of those yachts ashore at
Connel. You do have to wonder about leaving a yacht
out on a somewhat exposed mooring over the depths of winter with sails
and a big cockpit canopy on. The wee notice on the bow says
it's not for salvage. It was pretty bad everywhere but from
what we hear, over at Rhu they'll be rhu-ing the rhu-inn of not a few.

This
is from our newest sponsor. I had a smartphone myself for a
week
but took it back because it was so annoying. Anyway our friend Hurrel
tells us the following and it may be useful for those of you who can be
bothered with all that twittering and stuff.

Winter Sailing

In
the Caribbean. Apparently this is two ex-Sigma sailors who
have
been slumming it on Sojana and were 2nd, by 1 point in the Superyachts
Challenge. The first prize is a cask of rum (since if you're on a
Superyacht I imagine you have more Rolexes than you know what to do
with) and one would conclude that 2nd prize must be two casks of rum as
seen here. Now these here Superyachts. Why don't more of us
do
this kind of thing? You can charter Sojana (pictured below)
for a
mere 53,000 euros a week. Between 8 guests that should be ok, no?
Incidentally she's a Farr 35m (115ft) owned by Peter
Harrison. Do your own google to see more pictures.

The Holy Loch
Flying Fifteens had one of the the best regular turnouts of any racing
group on the Clyde last year and are at it again. The 2012
Travellers Series is more or less organised and details can be found on
www.flyingfifteenscotland.co.uk.
John Orr hopes to get confirmation soon of a May event over on the east
coast (wherever that is !). The series will also extend into
Englandshire with a visit to Derwent Reservoir in July and Helensburgh
Regatta is also on the agenda. In adition to these new venues
the word is that there will be more new faces this year.Hyde Sails will
be the headline sponsor again and Samteq, web developers based
at Holy Loch, continue to assist with provision of the
website.
Breaking The Ice
FYC
in conjunction with main
sponsors Clyde
Marina, and Geronimo Sailing School announce the 2012 Ice Breaker
Regatta and Training Weekend to be held at Clyde Marina, Ardrossan with
the
assistance of the RYA.
The main aim of this event is to
help you get
your boat and crew
in shape before the race season on the Clyde and as before some of the
best coaches around have been enlisted, namely Barry Dunning, RYA
Keelboat Coach and the irrepressible John Highcock of Saturn Sails
along with sail gurus from North Sails and Hyde.
It's
a two day event with the same format
http://www.ryascotland.org.uk/aboutus/bigweekend/Pages/default.aspxboth
days with a Barry Dunning
briefing at 9am in Cecchinis bistro and a series of short sharp
practice races, run by Pete Wright starting at 10.30. There is coaching
on the water followed by debriefing and video analysis of the day at
4pm
and
finally a prizegiving on Sunday.
FYC has noted the rise of
an SB3 fleet on the Clyde and would
like to invite these boats to get in touch and they will try to
organise
separate starts and class coaching if numbers permit.
Berthing for the weekend will be
free. For additional berthing
requirements, please contact the
Marina.
The official entry form and race
instructions will be on the FYC
website soon.
Additionally: On
7th or 8th April, an IRC weigh in will help optimize your IRC
handicap rating before the season starts. Please let Chris
Dodgshon at Clyde Marina know if you wish to attend so he can finalize
numbers and cost per boat.
Chas adds- This
has been a really enjoyable and helpful event in the past and if you
haven't tried it you should. I know it's a long way from the
hallowed waters of the East Patch but it's worth the trip.
