Fairlie Yacht Club was formed in 1961 by a small group of sailors who moored their yachts in Fairlie Bay.When Inverkip Marina opened, Royal Gourock YC declined the opportunity to organise racing from there and Fairlie moved in. The club hasn't looked back, now boasting over 400 members and running evening racing series from both Largs and Inverkip marinas. Otherwise FYC specialises in a series of weekend passage races and musters to places throughout the Clyde. While passage races and musters may lack excitement for younger sailors, the club's Cadet and Training Fund has been used to sponsor youngsters on Sail Training Association and Ocean Youth Club voyages. Also in recent years, training activities have expanded to include race coaching with teams regularly representing FYC at the traditional annual Schools and Cadets Week organised by the Mudhook Yacht Club.
With no club premises to maintain, membership is relatively inexpensive. Over the years the active racing membership seems, despite the questionable qualities of the Largs channel as a racing patch, to have centred in the Largs/Fairlie area with a slight sense of the Inverkip contingent being something of an offshoot despite the best efforts of Kip marina.
