Whether or not there is usefulness in a yacht club being able
to trace its origins back over some 150 years is perhaps debatable but there can
be no doubt that the the RNCYC can do just that and you can read the full illustrious
history which includes America's Cup challenges on the club's own website. It
has something of a reputation for having more members with bools in their mooths
than some other Clyde outfits but this is still a highly active club which places
a particular emphasis on One-Design racing. Vintage dayboat classes such as the
local Garelochs,Pipers and the International One Design are catered for as well
as an active fleet of Sigma 33s. Evening racing takes place weekly on the East
Patch at which time handicap racers can take their chances alongside the purists.
The club operates from a most impressive mansion house building set in extensive
grounds at Rhu with all the catering facilities that you might expect. There are
moorings for both members and visitors and the Honorary Secretary has been kind
enough to point out to us that that a launch service is available daily from 0900
to sunset throughout the main season.
Young sailors are developed through a well organised training programme beginning
in Optimists but the club can claim success with its juniors in a variety of RYA
dinghy classes and National squads.
RNCYC's latest initiative is to have assembled a fleet of Sonar
dayboats for the use of club members and this is already proving worthwhile in
the promotion of one design racing. The club also has a more active message board
on their website than some others.
