Way down south off our map, Troon Cruising Club has been around since 1955 and
with about 300 members is the largest club on the lower Clyde.
Racing is open to all at TCC, using a handicap system that takes into account
crew skill, and a number of other factors, including the age and type of sails.
This has encouraged a large number of family sailors to enter the club's twice
weekly programme. Also popular are weekend cruises in company, often held alongside
a race. Both normally end with a beach barbecue somewhere along the Clyde.
TCC has over 100 moorings within the harbour and a compound where boats may be
stored over the winter. By making use of the willing labour and skills of its
members, the club is able to keep prices low. Last year they managed to lift out
over 30 boats in one day. Because the club is in the harbour, alongside a commercial
marina it is unable to provide overnight moorings for visitors, but all facilities
are available at Troon Yacht Haven.
The club states that regular functions are held in the clubhouse,
although perhaps unusually for a sailing club, TCC has no bar. However, for those
in need of a drink, it is only a short walk next door to the Troon Yacht Haven
or across the road to several local pubs.
