Cumbraes Regatta - dinghies

Phil Alderson who sailed a Cherub in the asymmetric dinghy class taking third place on Sat writes the following for the Cherub mailing list:

'A weekend off work and a good event finally coincided so I took Aqua Marina down to Largs for the Cumbraes regatta There was a mixed turnout with four Int 14's, a tonne of 4000's, a 5 tonner some RS200's, 29er and assorted others to make up 16 in the Asymmetric class with the others making a turnout of about 50 boats plus 70 keelboats racing on a different course. The Saturday was sunny with between a F2 and F3 All the races went well with most of the boats getting away from us up wind but catching up down wind. We had a bad start in race 2 and sailed up the wrong start of the first beat but we managed to claw our way to the back of the 4000 fleet by the end of the race The series was three races long with Andy Bunyon winning with 3 1st's in his Beiker 2 Int 14, Gav Homer in his Ovi2 Int 14 getting three 2nd's. I got a third in Races one and three and a 5 th in Race 2 bringing me out as third overall with a 5000 in fourth.

On the Sunday the race is round the Cumbraes Island which is about 16 miles long. Unfortunately due to no wind the start was postponed and as Malcolm my crew had to get a flight from Aberdeen that evening I could not compete. However the Asymmetric class was won by Andy Bunyon, Winning the Cat Class for round the island was Hugh Magregor in his A class which weighs between 50 and 60kg's sailing weight. I managed to get a quick sail in it and is is a lesson in how cats should be- it was amazingly responsive in very little wind. '
