This is the season's value regatta - 6 races and a night's berthing in Rothesay
for 30 quid. On Saturday the forecast wind and rain did not appear and all racing
was in pleasant conditions with winds less than 10 knots. Class 1 failed to
appear and Class 2 consisted of Enigma and Rockin' Horse who were both punted
into CYCA class 3/4. Howard Morrison claimed he was in class 5& 6 as well
but what do you expect? The Sigma 33 turnout seemed perhaps a little down on
previous years but there was a quite healthy fleet of Etchells 22 - 5 or 6 of
the things. Watching their starts was particularly entertaining. An interesting
trend seems to be big boat owners downsizing and reproducing both the name and
the graphics of their unsold big boats on their Etchells. Hence we have a little
Tundra (SJ320) and a little Jabberwocky (Mumm 36).
Anyway the Etchells class was won by 'Aye' and 2nd was 'Spirit of Freedom'
Unsurprisingly 'Pepsi' with usual driver Jon Fitzgerald took first in the Sigma 33s with 'White Tub' 2nd although the Tub looked not quite in usual form at times. (Kevin looked particularly off form during Sunday's early postponement but nearby boats were clearly informed that there were no carrots or peas).
Similar gut wrenching activities were noticed among the crew of Rockin Horse before even leaving the pontoon. Troy's crew were however on near perfect form and on all three Sunday races we had Enigma worried and managed to take a first off them once. Our second place on the first Sun race was by merely 6 seconds. An Impala with the name 'Penelope Pitstop' painted on the transom but appearing in the results as 'Salamander XVIII' or whatever gave serious chase but got past us on corrected time only in the first Sat race (when we had an appalling start, 23 seconds late. I will be handing in my punishment exercise later.) The Impala pushed off for the third race each day which seemed odd to most of us - the rumour was that they ran out of beer. Rockin Horse missed the very last race which is a pity because it was the best, when the wind finally pushed above 10 knots and produced a good sailing breeze.
Troy crew was Chas, Anne, Colin, Maz, Andrew and making a debut on Troy - Alan McLeod (of Duckwall Pooley)
CCC sailing sec and race officer Ian McDonald who runs this event with great efficiency informed us that he had set a personal record for the event by running 3 races inside 3 hours 20 mins on Sunday. The races may be short but it is great fun and getting 6 starts in a single weekend is great practice. Pity it's the last event for many of us. Maybe the CCC should consider doing another of these early in the season.
